At Swan Hill Optical and Kerang Optical, our vision is to deliver exceptional eyecare and eyewear to our local communities. For over 25 years our team have been servicing the Mallee, Gannawarra and Loddon region. Co-owners Jenalle Pye and Kristy Burney have worked within the clinics for 18 years and took over ownership in 2019. Since then, they have created two new beautiful, purpose-built clinical spaces in Swan Hill and Kerang, invested heavily in the latest diagnostic and optical technology, expanded their staff to an industry educated team of 12, and sourced the highest quality frames and lenses on the worldwide market.

Our team are locals who understand and truly care about the healthcare needs of our community. Continuity of care is guaranteed, and we work tirelessly to ensure a premium full eyecare and eyewear service, that is accessible to all despite our rural location.

Our Optomestrists​

Our team of optometrists include some of the top graduates from The University of Melbourne and Deakin University. All are therapeutically qualified and can prescribe topical medication to treat any number of eye conditions. They live locally, are invested in the community, and pride themselves on the quality of care they provide. 

Jenalle Pye

Director and Principal Optometrist

Jenalle grew on a dairy farm in South Gippsland, and lived an outdoor lifestyle full of farm life, sport and music. Jenalle graduated from The University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Science with first class honours, majoring in Microbiology and Immunology. As a research scientist, she worked on drug development for Hepatitis B and E at the prestigious MacFarlane Burnet Institute for Medical Research, before moving across into breast cancer and diabetes fields at the Department of Medicine at St Vincent’s Hospital. During this time, Jenalle was fortunate to co-author many scientific papers, as well as present at both national and international conferences. With a desire to reside in the country and care for people, Jenalle returned to study a Bachelor of Optometry at The University of Melbourne, and again obtained first class honours. She worked briefly at The Australian College of Optometry in Carlton, before moving to Lake Boga with her husband in 2007. She is Swan Hill and Kerang’s longest servicing optometrist, and practices with the mantra of treating patients as if they were her own family. She enjoys combining her scientific background with clinical care when treating emergency patients, and revels in assisting children reach their full potential visually in both educational and sporting environments. Jenalle has four active children, and in her spare time supports them, their sporting clubs and schools in various roles. Fun Fact: Jenalle was in a rock band in secondary school, and performed at venues and festivals all over Gippsland.

Angus Boyd-Law

Optometrist

Angus is a Mallee boy, growing up with his parents and two siblings in Murray Downs. As a child and teenager, he enjoyed playing tennis, soccer and cricket for local clubs and was educated in Swan Hill and Ballarat. Angus graduated from Deakin University in Geelong with a Master in Optometry in 2017, and spent the first few years of his optometry career in Kalgoorlie, WA, working as a solo optometrist. He returned to join the team at Swan Hill Optical and Kerang Optical in 2019, and has enjoyed establishing a strong patient base within the community he grew up in. Angus enjoys assessing and diagnosing acute conditions, and using his therapeutic qualification. Angus is a genuine, down to earth person who gets along with everyone. He loves travelling and exploring new places, spending time with family and friends, and has an interest in learning about the natural world. Angus can even strum a tune on the guitar, but in the privacy of his own home!

Kayla Adams,

Graduate Optometrist

Kayla hails from Mildura, where she and her family have long history of giving back to the community in various forms. As a 16 year old, Kayla spent a year as an exchange student in Denmark, prior to completing her secondary education in Ballarat. She attended Deakin University and completed a Bachelor of Visual Science and Master of Optometry. Throughout her secondary and tertiary education, Kayla was a leader of student societies, a volunteer, and the recipient of several prestigious academic awards. Kayla began her optometry career at Swan Hill Optical and Kerang Optical in 2022, and whilst practicing all aspects of optometry, has a particular interest in inherited retinal conditions and paediatric eye care. Kayla and her partner have bought a house in Swan Hill, and she has thrown herself into the local community. Kayla is the current President on Swan Hill Sunrise Rotary, and has been instrumental in reinvigorating the international exchange student program for our district. In her little spare time she is a board game enthusiast, and is the proud owner of a pug called Edgar. Kayla is another closest musician within the team, and can play the saxophone.

Vivienne Lu

Graduate Optometrist

Vivienne was born and educated in western Melbourne. As a student, she was highly organised and accomplished during secondary school. So much so that others sought her assistance with their education, and she worked as a tutor in both the public and private sector. Vivienne is fluent in three languages (English, Cantonese and Vietnamese), and when studying volunteered for various charities including the Teddy Bear Hospital for the Good Friday Appeal at the Royal Children’s Hospital. As a high myope (short sighted), Vivienne’s interest in optometry began at a young age when she received her first pair of glasses. She studied at The University of Melbourne where she completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in neuroscience, and then a Doctor of Optometry. Vivienne began her career at Swan Hill Optical and Kerang Optical at the start of 2024 as a graduate optometrist. She has a caring and approachable nature, and endeavours to create a rapport with patients to ensure their visual needs are understood and met. Vivienne enjoys educating patients about their ocular health, and empowering them with this knowledge. Outside of work, Vivienne enjoys spending quality time with family and friends, and sharing delicious foods and experiences together. She loves to travel to new destinations and has developed a love of baking – which the team at Swan Hill and Kerang Optical benefit from! Interesting fact: Vivienne experiences aphantasia, which means she is unable to visualise or create mental pictures to “see” things in her mind.

Front of House

The front of house team is experienced, educated, fun, honest and highly valued. With various backgrounds in optics, medical reception, fashion and beauty, their collective experience means patients are in excellent hands when it comes to appointments, frame and lens selection.

Kristy Burney

Director and Senior Optical Dispenser

Kristy is Swan Hill born, and was educated in Swan Hill and Tooleybuc. Kristy worked in retail prior to the move into optics, and is the Mallee’s most knowledgeable optical dispenser. With a Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing from RMIT, and a Diploma in Advanced Optics from the Academy of Advanced Ophthalmic Optics, Kristy has nearly two decades of experience in the optical industry, and is the go to for the team to solve the challenging optical cases. As part of her role as front of house manager, Kristy is responsible for sourcing our diverse and beautiful frames. A gifted but humble artist, Kristy would love to find more time to draw amongst her busy work and home life. Her creative flair extends to our clinic window displays, which gain admiration and glowing feedback from near and afar. A mother of five children, Kristy has served with school parents groups and on school council for many years. Away from work she appreciates quiet weekends with the family.

Stephanie Mayers

Optical Dispenser

Stephanie has lived in Swan Hill since 2012 and been part of the team since 2014. She is diligent and has a high attention for detail. Steph has a Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing from RMIT, and is Kristy’s valued 2IC when it comes to all things front of house. When not keeping us on our toes, Steph enjoys spending quality time with her young family and friends.

Stephanie Newman

Trainee Optical Dispenser

Stephanie is a bright and positive team member, who is studying her Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing. With a background in retail in the jewellery industry, she is the expert when it comes to repairs and goes above and beyond to make sure our patients understand their lens options. Steph is also a creative, and in her downtime loves sewing, completing craft projects and spending time with her family. Fun fact: Steph has travelled to over 20 countries.

Kati Condely

Optical Assistant

Kati is a Kerang local, and has been a part of the front of house team for 7 years. Always bubbly and happy, Kati ensures a welcoming and relaxing experience for our patients. She is skilled in frame and lens selection, and is always seeking the best solution for our patients. Kati enjoys baking when she can find the time with her young family.

Gayle Radcliffe

Optical Assistant

Gayle is well known within the Gannawarra community. She enjoyed many decades as a talented sportsperson, and owned her own hairdressing salon. Seeking a change five years ago, Gayle joined our team and is based in the Kerang store. Her knowledge of the Kerang community is invaluable, and she is the friendly face that greets our patients. Gayle is across all aspects of front of house, from reception duties, to frame and lens selection. Outside of work, Gayle loves watching sport, weekends away with girlfriends, and enjoying holidays with her family.

Carolyn Duffy

Optical Receptionist

Carolyn is a well known local who has been an active member of the Nyah community for decades. With extensive experience in allied health and medical clinic administration, Carolyn enjoys a diverse role in our team, from reception duties to finding the perfect frame for a patient and encouraging them to try something new. The “mother” of our team, she is supportive and practical and spoils us with her home baking.
Family is Carolyn’s most important priority, but she also loves being a loud and proud supporter of the Nyah Nyah West and Carlton Football Clubs.

Rachel Arnett

Optical Assistant

Many would recognise Rachel from her 20 years of medical reception work, from which she holds various certificates in office administration.
Rachel is about loyalty, teamwork and quiet respect, and since joining our team has branched into learning the ropes of the optical industry.
Outside of work, Rachel is a huge supporter of her family’s pursuits, whether that be scouts, women’s football, or the field and game club.

Katrina McFarlane

Optical Receptionist

Katrina is the most recent addition to our team. With a background in fashion design, Katrina has travelled the world and at one stage owned bridal store in Melbourne. Katrina has a natural flair for creating a look, and enjoys helping patients choose a frame that is fashionable and stylish. Since returning to the area to raise her daughters on the family farm, Katrina has been involved various Lake Charm community groups and is an excited team manager of the girls’ netball teams and dance troupes. Interesting fact: Katrina loves the city, to travel and was once trapped on a tropical island following a volcano eruption.

Technology plays a crucial role at Swan Hill Optical and Kerang Optical, and we invest heavily in the latest optical, diagnostic and imaging technology. Our equipment is world class, allowing us to provide you with the best possible care during your comprehensive eye examination. Not only does such technology allow us to detect, diagnose and monitor eye conditions, but we can also obtain the most accurate assessment of your visual requirements and apply this information to your individual lens design to give you the best vision possible. Some of our equipment includes Zeiss Cirrus 6000 OCT, EDION wide field high definition retinal camera, Rodenstock ImpressionIST tower, and DNEye scanner.

Education

Part of our team’s vision and values is to continually increase our knowledge base, and to provide educational opportunities to all our staff on both a personal and professional level. This is through inhouse training, online courses, and seminar and conference attendance. We are proud to be involved in the education of future optometrists and health professionals.
